What is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerves are the largest (and longest) nerves of the body, reaching about the size of your thumb in diameter, and running down the back of each leg. When these nerves are irritated or affected by the inflammation of nearby soft tissues, doctors refer to this as sciatica.

Sciatica is a common cause of pain for millions of people. It comes in many varieties, as it can be caused by a number of different things. Some people feel dull aches and tinglings, whereas other people feel sharp pain. Sometimes the sensation is a burning one.

The pain from sciatica may be rooted in the back, but is often felt in other areas of the lower body. The buttocks, legs and feet are the common areas of pain for those suffering from sciatica.

The pain may increase over time, and may get worse during certain times or with certain activities. For some, the pain is worse at night, or after sitting or standing for a long time. Coughing, laughing and sneezing may also bring on bouts of pain.

Sciatica shouldn't persist for more than a couple of months. If it does persist, it is probably an indication of a more serious problem.

Why Chiropractic for sciatica?

Remember that sciatica is simply the term used when tissue puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. In some cases, deep muscles pinch this nerve. Our chiropractors can get to the root of the problem, and with spinal manipulation relieve pressure on the nerve.

Some underlying conditions require more invasive remedies for complete healing, but manual manipulation can serve to better align the spine, which can in turn improve the overall condition of the back and its tissue.
