Spring is finally here!
Reno has had a few beautiful days of sunshine and warmer weather. With that said, more people are working on their gardens, enjoying the outdoors, and just soaking up the sun rays. Whatever brings you out due to warm weather, it’s important to remember a few things to protect your spine and body:
-
Wear sunscreen – It’s important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin. A common fact that most people don’t know is that your skin is the most significant organ of your body? The sun rays feel good, but they can do damage to your skin cells and can cause your skin to burn.
-
Ease your way back to your activities – It can be very tempting to ride your bike for 3 + hours, but if you haven’t been on your bike since last Spring or haven’t been active during the winter months, it’s important to ease your way back into exercise. Start with a comfortable level with any sport you do and then build up as the days progress. Your muscles and your heart will thank you for it!
-
Stretch – Stretching is great for lengthening muscles and also improving circulation throughout the body. Keep morning stretches light and bouncy and stretches after activity can be held slightly longer. Check our Facebook and YouTube site, Reno Family Chiropractic, for general stretches for the spine and extremities.
-
Hydrate – Remember to drink water! It’s important to rehydrate your body if you have been outside working in the garden or exercises. As the heat increases and we have more days of sun, your body can quickly dehydrate. A good rule of thumb is the drink at least half of your body weight in ounces. For instance, if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 oz. of water. If you are adding exercise or gardening to your routine, then add another 25% of water.
-
Garden responsibly – It’s easy to forget proper gardening ergonomics when you’re so focused on a project. Remember to lift with your legs, avoid repetitive bending and lifting and twisting, wear protective gear likes gloves, lower back belt support, knee braces, and of course a cute well-brimmed hat and sunglasses! And remember to take breaks frequently to hydrate!
Just a few tips while we transition from spring into summer! Make it a great one!
