Why Conservative Care First?

When we find out what is wrong, we start with the most conservative treatment to fix the problem. With any issue, including neck and pack pain, the first step be conservative in nature.

There are a host of procedures for the back and neck, including manipulation, surgery, medicines and more. Approaching pain, back problems and neck problems with the least invasive treatments first is the right approach for a number of reasons.

The route some medical professionals take is to prescribe powerful painkillers. Not only can these be hard on the body, but they can be addictive. An addiction to pain killers is often much worse of a problem than back pain, and can destroy a life. Overdose of painkillers results in more deaths than overdose of some of the hardest drugs.

Certain procedures, such as spinal injections and spinal fusion, are more invasive than a chiropractic adjustment. More invasive procedures should only be considered if simple adjustment, exercise and therapy don’t work. Injections and surgeries can have side effects, and may be unnecessary.

Besides being unnecessary at times, more invasive surgeries and injections are expensive. When a patient or medical professional jumps past conservative care too fast, and goes straight to more serious procedures, it puts a burden on the patient financially. This approach to medicine also puts a burden on healthcare in general.

The American Chiropractic Association emphasizes that the conservative care offered by chiropractors is a great first step in dealing with neck and back pain.

“Chiropractic physicians are the highest-rated healthcare practitioners for low-back pain treatments with their patient-centered, whole-person approach that provides greater interaction and communication for appropriate diagnosis and developing more cost-effective treatment planning,” they say on their website.

Unfortunately, with the current healthcare system, insurance tends to compensate more invasive treatment very well, and doesn’t compensate time spent with the patient very well. This can lead to inaccurate diagnosis, and a patient misunderstanding their options.
